Weekend Match Report

The 1st and 2nd teams managed to do the double over Oldham on Saturday but the 3rds were heavily beaten away to top of the table Elton Vale. The 1st teams home game saw a low scoring game on a greenish wicket and damp outfield. Batting first, Clifton amassed a conservative score of 157 with Pro Hendro Puchert top scoring with 39, Alex Rodzoch (20), Andy Griffiths (19) providing the main bulk of the scoring. Oldhams innings got off to a terrible start when Puchert dismissed the opener in the first over and wickets tumbled on a regular basis. The wickets were shared around with Hendro Puchert taking 3-43, Greg Jennings 2-55 and spin twins Mubeem Akhtar taking 3-12 and Andy Hough 2-3 respectively.

The 2nds  also chalked up a comfortable win. Oldham batted first and only managed a modest 136 all out with Clifton's bowlers taking advantage of the wicket. Pick of the bowlers being Danny Hill, Rob Meredith and Oliver Dunn all taking 3 wickets.

With the 3rd team severely weakened by cry off and injuries, it wasn't surprising to to see them on the end of a heavy 8 wicket defeat away to top of the table Elton Vale. Batting first, Clifton were soon in trouble on 11 for 3 but a 67 run 4th wicket partnership between Adam Rogers (39) and Andy Tocher (27) gave the innings a boost but runs were hard to come by with the innings finishing on 106 for 9 at the end of the innings. Elton Vale made short work of the response and cantered to an 8 wicket victory in 18 overs.

Sundays games against Ashton also saw a double delight for Clifton as both teams ended up taking maximum points. The 1st team batted first and amassed a reasonable total of 216 given the conditions. Openers Chris Lord and Andy Griffiths got the team off to a fine start with both batsmen getting half centuries. Hendro Puchert also contributing with a valuable 40. Ashton's innings seemed to be going well but collapsed from 117-3 to 137 all out with spin twins Andy Hough taking 5 wickets and Mubeem Akhtar  taking 4.

The second team also pulled off a relatively easy victory at home to Ashton but left it late wrapping up the innings after ripping through the Ashton early and middle order batsmen. Batting first Clifton scored a creditable 238. Darren King scoring his second sucsessive centry for the 2nd's with 110 not out and was ably supported by Ian Morris with 49. The bowlers soon set about their task in quick time taking wickets in regular succession. Pick of the bowlers being Danny Hill and Steve Thorpe with 4 wickets and 3 wickets respectivly. The bowling was backed up by some fine fielding with Andy Lord's direct hit from 30 yards spurring his team mates on together with a superb one handed catch at slip by Ian Morris.
