Salford Schools
Cricket Association Under 10s development Group – 2010 Final
Clifton CC v Roe Green
CC
Sunday 18th
July 2010

The final of the Salford Schools Cricket Association Under 10s development
Group was played at Clifton CC on Sunday 18th July. Conditions were
difficult with the ground wet after a significant amount of rainfall overnight.
Clifton won the toss and chose to field first in the 16 over per side final.
Roe Green started their innings on 200 runs and made swift progress hitting a
number of early boundaries. They were pegged back by wickets from Sam Dorsey,
Joe Parker and Harry Golland. Roe Green’s batsmen then gained the upper hand
again with 6 further boundaries in overs 11 to 14, but a wicket off the final
ball of the innings from Robert Lord meant the final total was reduced to 260.
This looked a reasonable total at the halfway point, but knowing that Roe
Green’s bowlers would have to bowl with a wet ball, Clifton went out to bat in
an optimistic mood. Wickets in the first and fourth overs pegged back early
progress made by Clifton and when Sam Dorsey and Christopher Royle came to the
crease the required run rate was up to 5 an over. Excellent batting from Sam
and Chris, followed by some equally confident strokeplay from Jakada Sandiford,
Jack Golland and Harry Golland set up a tense finish. Two wickets were lost in
the 13th over and Daniel Ainscough was forced to retire hurt after
taking a nasty blow on his thumb. This set up a tense finish but the players
were the calmest people in the ground, especially Sam Dorsey who took Dan’s
place. Elliott Hogben continued the superb running between the wickets that he
showed in earlier rounds, and the two steered Clifton to victory by 15 runs,
the final total being 275.
Christopher Royle stepped forward to accept the Cup from Nigel Warne and
special note of thanks must go to Nigel for arranging the tournament.
WILL
POWER !
The
Clifton production line is in overdrive again as Will Davidson scored a
remarkable 105 not out for Lancashire under 13s against Cumberland on June 15th
and Dean Morris has been selected to play in the Lancashire under 15s annual
North v South game and Sam
Towers has also been selected to play for Lancashire Under 15’s this season.
The club
is also well represented at Salford District level with four at under 15 (Dean
Morris, Tom Hubber, Matthew Tye and Sam Towers), two and under 13 (Christopher
Royle and William Davidson) and five at under 11 (Sam Dorsey, Christopher
Royle, Robert Lord, Thomas Nolan and Daniel Ainscough)

SEASON UPDATE
Three quarters of the way into the season and the
large squad of Under 11 players have got off to an excellent start. The latest
victory at Walsden by 95 runs has taken the stats to 5 wins out of 8. The games
that were lost were close battles and the team have narrowly missed out by 7
runs against Milnrow and only 1 run against Middleton. As the weeks go on the
there is a significant improvement in the team. As my first season as manager
and coach of the under 11s, both myself and Hendro have taken on a challenge,
coaching and selecting a team of over 20 children, however seeing so many
children interested in playing Clifton CC is pleasing to see. The effort that
each child puts into coaching sessions and matches makes managing and coaching
the side worthwhile.
Individual outstanding performances
Throughout the season there have
been some great individual performances that have given Clifton the edge to go
on and win games.
There have been some great games to
watch this season so far but one that sticks out was the away fixture at
Rochdale. The Rochdale side batted first and set a total of 83 runs. As Clifton
went into bat, each pair batted very well only losing one wicket throughout the
whole innings. As pair number 5 came in, Harry Collins and Sam Dorsey were set
a target off 22 runs to win the game. As each over passed the target was
looking more in reach and a final partnership of 24 runs against a very good
bowling attack sealed the victory and completed what was a successful and outstanding
performance from the team. This game also saw a debut u11s Wicket keeping
position for young Joe Parker who stepped up and gave an excellent performance
to seal his Man of the Match award.
Win at Walsden - Jordan Paul and Joshua Lewis put on a partnership of 35
runs.
Sam Dorsey and Harry Collins put on a
partnership of 36 runs.
Clifton also took 13 wickets to reduce
Walsden’s score by 52 runs
Win at Unsworth - Joshua Lewis 4 wickets from 3 overs.
Win at Bamford Fieldhouse – Robert Lord 20 runs and 2 wickets, a great all round
performance.
All round performance – Tom Nolan has scored over 130 runs in 7 matches.
Rest of the Season
The under 11s side have 4 games left
to play and a tournament set for the 11th of July at Radcliffe,
hopefully a positive end to the season can bring a successful 2010 for the
Clifton CC under 11s Junior team.

U9s
(pictured above)
Clifton CC's youngest
team, the Under 9s, made it six wins out of six last week in the inaugural
Central Lancashire League competition for the 'Clifton Cup' with a hard
fought victory on June 10th away at Royton CC. This completed the first
half of the season, during which the team have played this year’s entrants
Radcliffe, Littleborough and Royton twice. Following the earlier report on
these pages of the home win against Royton, Clifton travelled away to
Littleborough on 13th May. The margin of victory was 22 runs
with a star performance from Sam Dorsey with 2 wickets and a 24 run unbeaten
partnership between Robert Lord and Adam Bray.
The team followed this
with a resounding 89 run victory over Radcliffe, Daniel Ainscough and Jack
Golland scoring 44 runs in their partnership and Robert Lord chipping in with 2
wickets.
Littleborough were the
next victims on May 27th, Clifton getting home by a comfortable 30
runs. Sam Dorsey bagged three wickets, with Robert Lord and Adam Bray again top
scoring in a 19 run partnership. There were also debut wickets for Tom
Forbes-Leith and Tom Wilde.
The next
game resulted in a slightly less comfortable win over Radcliffe.
Batting first Clifton amassed 252 runs; the top scorers being Taylor Schofield
and Daniel Ainscough with a 28 run partnership. Radcliffe showed markedly
improved form and needed just 16 runs to win off the last three overs but
excellent bowling from Tom Wilde, Sam Dorsey and Daniel Ainscough saw Clifton
home.
.... and finally the
aforementioned win against Royton on Jun 10th. Clifton batted first
on a low bouncing Royton wicket and despite some excellent run scoring shots, a
steady flow of wickets meant that Clifton were restricted to 250 net
runs on a small pitch. Royton made steady progress chasing the total
but wickets from Tom Wilde, Robert Lord and three from Daniel Ainscough (two in
a tense final over) meant that Clifton maintained their unbeaten record at
the mid-point of the season.
UPDATE
Clifton CC under 9s enter the final two league
games undefeated and look almost certain to win the Central Lancashire League
Clifton Cup, which is being contested for the first time this year. The latest
two victories came against Littleborough at home and then away at Royton.
Clifton CC scored a net total of 250 runs against Littleborough and restricted
to guests to 228, recording a comfortable 22 run victory. The main contributors
with the bat were Sam Dorsey and Daniel Ainscough combining to score 21 runs in
three overs. There were wickets for Thomas Wilde (2), Lucas Sackfield (2), Ben
Stevenson and Taylor Schofield.
Although the totals scored against Royton were lower, the result was similar
with Clifton winning by 23 runs. Max Mulligan and Daniel Ainscough shared the
biggest net partnership, but the steady loss of wickets throughout the innings
left Clifton with a net total of 233 runs. This proved to be enough due mainly
to excellent bowling from Sam Dorsey (3 wickets). There were also wickets for
Adam Bray, Harry Golland, Thomas Wilde, Max Mulligan, Ben Stevenson and Daniel
Ainscough. The final two games against Littleborough and Radcliffe will decide
the first name to be engraved on the CLL's newest trophy and there are high
hopes in the Clifton camp that the cup will stay 'at home'.
U10s
On a balmy
mid-summers morning (no, honestly, it was!! ...... June 13th for the
disbelievers), a squad of Clifton's Under 10s travelled to Monton and
Weaste CC for the group stage of the 2010 Salford Cricket Development
competition. Although a few of the parents appeared to be nursing hangovers
similar to that of Robert Green following his USA howler the night before,
thankfully the boys were in much better condition and form as they went into
the tri-club competition. First up for Clifton were Monton and Weaste and
the host side proved no match for their visitors as they were restricted to
just 202 runs (net plus 2) in their 16 overs. The bowling was first class with
just five wides bowled throughout the whole innings and the highlight of the
fielding being a superb diving catch at cover by Daniel Ainscough. There were
wickets for Robert Lord (2), Daniel Ainscough, Elliott Hogben, Jack Golland,
Christopher Royle, Jakada Sandiford and Sam Dorsey, but the undoubted star of
the show was Joe Parker with an impressive return of 3 wickets in his 2
overs and an excellent catch to boot. The batting performance was equally
impressive with just one wicket lost in the 16 overs faced. The top partnership
was between Sam Dorsey and Christopher Royle with 45 runs scored in their 4
overs. All of this resulted in a resounding 78 run win.
With the prize of a
place in finals day on offer, the Clifton juniors entered their second game
against Winton with a positive mindset. Bowling first, Clifton again took
regular wickets, nine in all - the star performers were Robert Lord (4
wickets in 2 overs) and Harry Golland (2 wickets in 2 balls). Winton
managed a final total of 203 runs (net plus 3) which was to prove no match
for the Clifton boys, particularly after Robert Lord and Joe Parker got off to
a flyer with a partnership of 32 runs off the first four overs. Steady runs
from Daniel Ainscough, Jakada Sandiford, Elliott Hogben and Jack Golland
followed, before a final thrust of 44 runs from Sam Dorsey and Christopher
Royle took Clifton over the magical 300 mark. Awesome!
Details of finals day
and the teams through will follow, but special mention must at this point go to
the parents and helpers, without whom such days would not be possible. Thank
you!
UPDATE
On
Sunday 11th July 2010 Clifton's Under 10s travelled to Swinton Moorside for the
semi-final of the Salford Schools Cricket Association development competition.
The team were unstoppable in the earlier group stage of the competition and
continued this form into the semi-final. Clifton won the toss and put the home
side in. Joe Parker set the tone with two wickets in the first over. Regular
wickets followed with Robert Lord, Harry Golland, Jack Golland, Elliott Hogben,
Daniel Ainscough, Jakada Sandiford and Christopher Royle all hitting the
stumps, leaving Swinton Moorside to post a score of just 181 net runs in their
20 overs. Clifton set about their batting task in ruthless fashion with the
ball disappearing to the boundary frequently. Allied with some excellent
running between the wickets and the loss of just four wickets, Clifton reached
a huge net total of 349 runs. Top scorers were Sam Dorsey (26 runs), Daniel
Ainscough (22 runs), Christopher Royle (21 runs) and Robert Lord (21 runs). All
in all, an extremely convincing victory.
