u11s lcb.jpgFinal date for under 11s

The under 11s have still all to play for in this highly successful season, as they progressed to the LCB final against Heaton on August 31st at the expense of Roe Green after scores of 237 to 228.

Meanwhile.... Clifton's League winning u.11s side enjoyed another slice of victory on Bank Holiday Monday at the Littleborough tournament. Clifton’s side were placed in a tough group with Royton "A", Littleborough "B" and eventual group winners Rochdale. Clifton got of to a poor start in their first group game losing convincingly to Rochdale after giving the opposition 27 runs in wides and no-balls. In our second game we had to improve or we would have been home rather early. After a nail-biting 16 overs the scores were tied at 35 each so the game was declared a draw. Royton then played Rochdale and suffered the same fate as Clifton, defeat. As things stood Clifton had played two, lost one and drawn one whereas Royton had played three, lost one, drawn one and won one. Clifton needed to win their final group game against Littleborough "B" and score 60 runs to qualify for the semis. After a boundary filled knock from Jonathon "JJ" Dunn, the last over was about to be bowled and Clifton were on 61. Dean Davis and Daniel Yearsley showed great maturity with the bat and saw off the last over of the game to qualify.

Going into the semis Clifton had all the odds stacked against them with the loss of two key players. Tom Blackford unfortunately picked up a bad thumb injury causing him to miss out and Harry Southern, not expecting the tournament to over-run by 3 hours, had a football match to play. As if that wasn't bad enough we had to play the unbeaten home side of Littleborough "A". Littleborough batted first and were restricted to a low total of 24 due to some excellent bowling from Lewis Webster, Paul Greenalgh, Oliver Blakesley and Ryan Cunliffe. Clifton also picked up a wicket in the last over of the game. Again Clifton needed to hold on to secure victory in the last two overs and did so with relative ease.

So to the final. After considerable controversy in the other semi and the last ball of the game having to be re-played, Clifton were to face Middleton in the final. By this time it was 7-50 and raining quite hard but the game went ahead. Clifton bowled well again with George Rudd setting the perfect field and showing maturity beyond his years as a captain. We managed to reduce Middleton to 32. By this time the light was becoming far too bad to play and we even resorted to using a white ball in order to finish the game. However with 2 pairs left to bat and Clifton in the driving seat, the game was stopped and the trophy was shared.

Liam would like to thank all the parents for their hard work and support on Monday as it was an extremely long and tiring day. I don't imagine that any of us thought we would be there for 12 hours but I’m sure we are all extremely proud of the boys.
