“THAT” match

It had been another dreary wet Summer, but the Sunday of the second weekend in September was a warm, balmy sort of day as players made their way to their respective games little knowing that history was about to be made. The seconds embarked upon the trip down the M62 to Royton and the thirds were playing out a fairly meaningless end-of-season local derby down at Swinton Moorside. The exploits of Chinthaka Jayasinghe had become something of a legend over the period of transition from the Bolton image002.gifAssociation into the Central Lancashire League, but he hadn’t been re-appointed for 2008 so this was to be one of his final games for Clifton. Records had already tumbled during the season, as the 106 year old high score of 297 had been smashed twice with the first XI rattling up two scores in excess of 300. However, what happened that afternoon against decent enough opposition, not only made club history but, for the first time ever, lodged Clifton into the much vaunted annals of Wisden. Word began to filter down to Swinton Moorside via text messages and phone calls and, by the time Chintha reached a century with almost twenty overs left, we knew there was something special in the offing. In the final analysis, he scored a century in ‘sixes’ alone and scored only 39 runs out of his 181 which required him to actually run. More astonishing still is the fact that, once he was out, a further 104 runs were added; goodness knows how many he might have scored had St Kitts and Leeward Island professional Junie Mitcham not tempted the big man once too often. Mitcham finished with 1-118 of nine overs. Having reached 415, that was not the end of matters however, as Royton made a great fist of chasing down the huge total and at 171-2 with plenty of time left there was a tiny but discernable chance of something even more extraordinary happening. However, the pressure eventually told and danger men Mitchum and Luke Proctor fell to slow bowling and the middle and late order found the task too much. By the time we returned to the clubhouse from our respective 2nd XI and 3rd XI matches, the news was out. Remarkably, as we approached the clubhouse door, he was there, beaming, in his own inimitable Sri Lankan way, from ear to ear and looking as though he had been for a stroll down Blackpool prom rather than smashing cricket balls to all parts of Clifton.   Records for the early days of the club are a bit sketchy, but we can be 99.9% certain that the following records were broken on September 9th 2007.

HIGHEST TOTAL BY ANY CLIFTON SIDE - 415

HIGHEST INDIVIDUAL TOTAL BY ANY CLIFTON PLAYER - 181

HIGHEST NUMBER OF SIX HITS IN A SINGLE INNINGS BY ANY CLIFTON PLAYER - 17
