Clifton CC’s 1st XI were left to rue missed opportunities as they exited the ECB National Club Championship following a 42-run defeat to Bowdon CC at Manchester Road.
After winning the toss, Bowdon opted to bat first and were powered by a magnificent unbeaten century from Subhaan Mahmood. Anchoring the innings with great composure, Mahmood struck 119* off 122 balls, blending patience with fluent strokeplay, including 11 fours and 2 sixes. He received intermittent support from Haider Hussain (28) and Colin Parrott (14) as Bowdon posted a competitive 211-8 from their 40 overs.
Clifton’s bowlers worked hard on a good surface. Oliver Sleight was the pick, claiming 3-48, while Daniel Higham (2-25) and Finlay Testa (Pictured: 1-27) kept things tight in the middle overs.
In response, Clifton started brightly, with Matthew Van Dyk (20) and Sam Dorsey (31) showing early intent. However, wickets fell regularly, and despite fighting contributions from Ethan Pietkiewicz (24) and Daniel Higham (24), the hosts lost momentum during the middle overs.
Clifton were eventually dismissed for 169 in 35.5 overs, falling short of the target. Bowdon’s bowlers shared the spoils, with Nick Thomas (2-17) and James Bottomley (2-19) leading a disciplined attack that kept the pressure on throughout.
Though the result was disappointing for Clifton, the fixture provided valuable experience and highlighted areas of promise, particularly with the ball. They’ll now turn their focus to upcoming league fixtures as they look to bounce back strongly.
